Wonderful bird bath! The top locks onto the base with a twist. It blends in with the green of the grass and the hedgerow behind it and looks as though it belongs. And the best part is...the wrens and finches took to it for drinks within three minutes and began bathing and flipping water about shortly thereafter. I couldn't be more pleased! It is light enough to be lifted up and moved when the lawn is mowed. UPDATE: This birdbath worked well for me until an early winter freeze. Then the bowl cracked in half and three years later I am replacing it! Take it inside in the fall if you want it to last. The birds enjoy it. As with other reviews of the item, the ceramic locking mechanism on the base of the bowl is a design flaw in that it comes off the base easily. I reattached mine with super glue. When you seat the bowl onto the pedestal, let it seat itself gently and tighten it with just enough force to snug it down lightly. The other thing is if you live where the the temp drops below freezing, get yourself a heating unit to put in the bowl or it will crack. The first one ordered came with a flaw in the bowl with a spot that was rough and discolored. It looked like it had been patched or covered up. Second one came in good condition. It is attractive in the garden but I’m not sure how good it will hold up and look over time. The base is hollow so not the best quality but overall it was not expensive. I would not order it again. I would rather pay more and get a better product. We were really looking forward to this new bird bath. It is beautiful; however, it is crooked. The bowl when put on the pedestal is slanted. The pedestal is molded lop sided, so the bowl is lop sided and when filled the water tilts to one side leaving the other side of the bowl almost empty. It is too much of a pain to send it back and to complain. Since it was more than $100.00, it is defective. UGH! I am going to try to put a rock in the middle of the bowl, maybe that will even out the water....No Birds yet either...Wow.... WAY better than I expected. Rugged as all get-out and totally interlocking and the color is spectacular. The finish is super smooth, so algae does not accumulate, either. Simply hose it out everyday and refill.I followed another review and buried half of a PVC pipe (2" in diameter, I think: you better measure, first), leaving the upper half exposed as a structural riser to slide the birdbath over. We get a lot of raccoons leaping up and drinking/washing their food and now they can't knock this baby over.I love this birdbath. This is the second one I bought. First one for me and then one for my sister. She fell in love with mine! Great birdbath. Nice elegant looking ceramic. Even my humming birds like it! I might just have to buy another one for the back yard. This is not heavy but it is ceramic. It is not plastic! It arrived quickly & was carefully packaged. I bought the green color & it is really beautiful. It looks great in my front flower bed. I put a stake under it as suggested by another buyer. I've yet to see birds in it, but I remain hopeful.
